Kenya’s top golfer Njoroge Kibugu is five million shillings richer after receiving a government reward in recognition of his outstanding performance at the Magical Kenya Open (MKO) held in February.

The cash award fulfils a pledge made by William Ruto during the tournament’s closing ceremony at Karen Country Club on February 22.

Speaking during the cheque presentation at Talanta Plaza in Nairobi on Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya said the reward demonstrates the government’s commitment to nurturing talent and advancing the growth of sports in the country.

Describing Kibugu as one of Kenya’s golfing heroes, Mvurya praised his skill, discipline and dedication, noting that his performance is inspiring a new generation of golfers.

He added that Kibugu’s strong showing at the MKO has already attracted international attention, opening doors for participation in global tournaments.

“Njoroge has attracted significant international attention. Very soon, he will be joining international tournaments,” said the CS.

Mvurya further noted that the award underscores the government’s resolve to identify, nurture and support talent across various sporting disciplines.

He assured that the ministry will continue working closely with federations and stakeholders to develop sports into sustainable sources of livelihood.

He also revealed that the government, in collaboration with the golfing fraternity, is developing a comprehensive golf curriculum for schools and other institutions as part of efforts to nurture young talent.

Receiving the cheque, Kibugu said the recognition serves as motivation not only for him but also for aspiring golfers across the country.

He noted that it affirms the value of dedication, training and investment in the sport.

“This is a great step, not just for me but for all golfers, especially juniors aspiring to play professionally. It shows that with time and effort, success is achievable,” he said.

Kenya Open Golf Limited chairman Patrick Obath welcomed the government’s move, terming it a significant boost to the sport.

He added that the golfing fraternity remains committed to developing young talent to compete at future global tournaments.

The ceremony was attended by Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi, Philip Ochola, and other senior officials from the sports department.
