Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has nominated Danish Otieno Onyango as the new Deputy Governor, following the resignation of Oyugi Magwanga from the position.
Onyango, who currently serves as the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Roads and Public Works, will continue holding the same portfolio alongside his new role.
In a statement to newsrooms, Governor Wanga praised Onyango’s stellar performance and integrity since joining public service in 2003.
“I am confident he will serve the county effectively in this new role, based on his exemplary performance since 2022,” she said.
The Governor highlighted key milestones achieved under Onyango’s tenure, including the expansion of road networks and improved connectivity across all 40 wards.
“In the 2024/2025 financial year, we opened 736 kilometres of new roads, while 538 kilometres of existing roads underwent routine maintenance,” Wanga noted.
She added that Onyango has overseen transformative projects such as the KSh1.4 billion KISIP II programme in informal settlements, the expansion of Kabunde Airstrip, and played a key role in organizing the 2nd Homa Bay International Investment Conference (2024) and the 9th Devolution Conference.
“Given his wide experience, I am confident he will effectively handle the functions of the Office of the Deputy Governor,” Wanga affirmed.
The Governor also announced changes in the County Executive, reassigning Dr. Joash Aloo from the Trade docket to Agriculture.
Isaac Ongiri, currently Chief Officer for Governance, Administration, Communication and Devolution, has been nominated as CEC for the same department, while Elijah Dede has been nominated as CEC for Trade, Industry, Tourism, Marketing and Cooperative Development.
The nominees’ names have been forwarded to the County Assembly for vetting and approval.
