The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Kenya’s digital and communications sector through modern, forward-looking legislation aimed at keeping pace with a rapidly evolving technology landscape.

Recently, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo, received a briefing on proposed amendments to the Kenya Information and Communications Act, alongside 15 new regulatory proposals designed to enhance governance and operational efficiency within the ICT sector.

The proposed Kenya Information and Communications Act (Amendment) Bill seeks to strengthen regulatory oversight, improve coordination across the ICT ecosystem, and align existing laws with emerging technologies and industry demands.

During the session, Kabogo provided strategic direction on the reforms, offering recommendations to ensure the changes effectively support sector growth and innovation.

The meeting brought together key ministry officials, including Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Stephen Isaboke, and Secretary of Information Temesi Mukani, as well as representatives from the Communications Authority of Kenya.

Officials emphasized that strengthening the legal and regulatory framework is key to sustaining Kenya’s digital growth.

The reforms are expected to enhance consumer protection, promote fair competition, and create a more attractive environment for investment in the ICT sector.

If implemented, the proposals will play a critical role in positioning Kenya to better respond to emerging technologies while reinforcing its status as one of Africa’s leading digital economies.
