Precautionary Notice Issued as Flood Risk Rises at Nairobi Dam

Residents living downstream of Nairobi Dam have been ordered to move to safer ground immediately following a precautionary notice issued by the Water Resources Authority (WRA).

In the notice, WRA warned that ongoing heavy rains have significantly raised water levels at the dam, posing a serious threat to nearby communities.

“Due to the ongoing heavy rains, residents living downstream of Nairobi Dam are warned of an imminent flood risk,” the notice reads.

“The rising water levels in the reservoir indicate potential breaching of the dam embankment.”

The authority directed that “everyone living or operating downstream of the dam is cautioned to be vigilant and relocate to higher grounds,” emphasizing that the directive takes effect “immediately.”

The order, signed by Noel Ndeti, Assistant Sub-Regional Coordination Officer, underscores growing concerns over flooding in Nairobi as the long rains intensify.

This warning comes amid widespread reports of flooding across several parts of the country, with heavy rains already causing displacement, infrastructure damage, and fatalities in recent days.

Low-lying and informal settlements—many of which are situated along riverbanks and near water reservoirs—remain particularly vulnerable.

Authorities have urged residents to heed evacuation calls and avoid crossing flooded areas, as emergency response teams remain on high alert.

The WRA has also called on local leaders and disaster response agencies to support evacuation efforts and ensure public safety.

Residents are advised to stay updated through official government communication channels as weather conditions continue to evolve.
