Senator Okenyuri Joins Kisii Faithful in Palm Sunday’s Sacred Paradox

A gentle rustle of palm fronds, lifted high against the morning sky, set the tone as worshippers streamed into St. Thomas the Apostle Metaburo Parish, Kisii County.

The worshippers’ liveliness captured the spirit of a season turning sacred.

On this Palm Sunday, the Catholic faithful gathered in solemn celebration, their hands clutching green branches that symbolized both honor and hope.

Among them was Senator Essy Okenyuri, who later on shared lively images on social media.

Inside the church, the air carried a reflective stillness as Father Dominic Gesimba led the Mass, guiding congregants through the deeper meaning of the day.

Palm Sunday, he explained, stands as one of the most profound paradoxes in the Christian calendar.

It marks the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, where crowds laid palm branches and garments before Him, proclaiming, “Hosanna to the Son of David.”

Yet beneath the celebration lay a sobering truth—this was not a march toward earthly glory, but a journey toward the cross.

Echoing this reflection, Okenyuri noted, “Palm Sunday stands as a profound paradox… a moment of triumphant acclamation intermeshed with the quiet unfolding of divine sacrifice.”

She added that many welcomed Christ without fully grasping His path, saying, “While they welcomed Him, He was headed to the cross.”

The humility of the donkey, the simplicity of the procession, and the sincerity of praise all reveal a kingship defined not by power, but by redemptive love.

“This sacred moment invites us to a deeper contemplation of Christ’s kingship,” Okenyuri reflected, “one defined by love, not dominion.”

As Easter approaches, the faithful are called to introspection—“Do we remain steadfast even in seasons of trial?” she posed.

Entering Holy Week, believers were urged to walk with reverence, embracing both the glory and sacrifice that define the journey of faith.

Palm Sunday originates from the biblical account of Jesus Christ entering Jerusalem, where crowds welcomed Him by laying palm branches and praising Him as king.

It signifies both celebration and sacrifice, marking the beginning of Holy Week and reminding Christians that Christ’s triumphant entry ultimately led to His suffering and crucifixion.
