Kenya Premier League side Zetech University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), and Kenyatta University (KU) emerged as the standout performers at the 12th edition of the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) ball games playoffs.

The tournament concluded on Sunday at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

Zetech University clinched their maiden women’s football title after edging MMUST 1-0 in a tightly contested final.

Daisy Kisuya netted the decisive goal, capitalizing on a loose ball after the MMUST goalkeeper spilled it, allowing her a simple tap-in.

The victory was even more remarkable as Zetech played with ten players after their goalkeeper was sent off.

Team captain Sheril Muyera stepped in as a makeshift goalkeeper and delivered a heroic performance to preserve the lead.

“This is our maiden victory after losing last year’s final to KU. When we were reduced to ten players, I took up the goalkeeper role and managed to deliver,” said Muyera.

Zetech will now represent Kenya at the upcoming East Africa University Games in Dodoma, Tanzania.

MMUST reaffirmed their dominance in women’s volleyball, securing a fourth consecutive title with a commanding straight-sets win over the University of Nairobi (UoN). The Kakamega-based side cruised to a 25-18, 25-13, 25-16 victory in a one-sided final.

Captain Mitchell Okumu credited teamwork and consistent training for their success.

“We always train together as a team, and during our free time we work on correcting mistakes. That has helped us shine,” she said, expressing confidence ahead of the regional games.

“Dodoma, here we come as champions. We want to excel not just in Kenya but across East Africa.”

KU dominated the netball competition, sweeping both the men’s and women’s titles.

The men’s team defeated the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) 45-33 in the final, while the women’s side edged MMUST 39-34.

Men’s captain Billy Otieno was delighted to cap his university career with victory.

“This is my final year, and winning the title means everything. We worked hard as a team and remained unbeaten throughout the tournament,” he said.

In handball, MMUST claimed the women’s title after defeating Daystar University, while Daystar’s men’s team edged KU 21-19 in a closely fought final.

United States International University Africa (USIU-A) recorded mixed fortunes. Their women’s team secured a 58-53 win over African Nazarene University, while the men’s side fell 59-47 to Zetech.

In rugby 15s, Maseno University delivered a dominant performance to defeat Moi University 35-13 and lift the title on Saturday, rounding off an action-packed weekend of university sports.
