Harambee Stars Defender Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma Nears Return After Nine-Month Injury Layoff

Harambee Stars left-back Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma is edging closer to a long-awaited return to action after nearly nine months on the sidelines, offering a major boost for both his club Raków Częstochowa and the national team.

The 29-year-old defender has been out since August 28, 2025, when he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during a training session with the Polish champions.

The injury ruled him out of the better part of the 2025/2026 season, dealing a significant blow to his club campaign and Kenya’s defensive setup.

Ouma has spent most of his rehabilitation period in Nairobi, focusing on recovery and strength conditioning. He has now rejoined Raków in Poland, where he is undergoing final medical assessments ahead of a possible return to team training.

Speaking on his progress, the speedy full-back expressed optimism as he prepares for crucial return-to-play (RTP) tests that will determine his readiness.

“This week I am supposed to do the RTP tests. Everything will be assessed and hopefully I can start to train with the team. I am really looking forward to getting back,” he said.

Despite the encouraging progress, Ouma has ruled out featuring in competitive matches before the end of the current season, opting for a cautious approach to avoid setbacks.

His return will be a timely boost for Harambee Stars, where he has been a key figure thanks to his pace, defensive discipline, and attacking runs from the left flank.

His absence has been felt in recent international assignments, with Kenya forced to reshuffle its backline.

At club level, Raków Częstochowa — one of Poland’s top sides in recent seasons — will also be keen to reintegrate the Kenyan international as they prepare for the next campaign, including potential European competition.

If he successfully completes the RTP phase, Ouma is expected to gradually resume full training before targeting a competitive comeback at the start of the 2026/2027 season.
