The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has opened its online portal for the 2026/2027 university and college placement cycle.
The applications are set to close on May 6, 2026.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced the opening on Tuesday following a meeting with KUCCPS officials led by Chief Executive Officer Agnes Wahome.
The exercise targets candidates who sat the 2025 KCSE examination. Those who attained a minimum grade of C+ qualify for degree programmes, while students with lower grades can apply for diploma and certificate courses in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
Ogamba described the placement process as critical in transitioning students from secondary education to higher learning and urged eligible candidates to submit applications within the four-week window.
Applicants are required to submit their course selections through the KUCCPS student portal using their KCSE and KCPE index details. Candidates are advised to select courses based on their qualifications and cluster subject requirements, which determine eligibility for specific programmes.
KUCCPS places students in 42 public universities, including the Open University of Kenya, about 30 private universities, as well as national polytechnics, teacher training colleges, and other TVET institutions.
Placement to public universities qualifies students for government scholarships and Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) support, while those admitted to private institutions are only eligible for HELB loans.
The agency uses cluster points derived from KCSE subject performance to rank applicants for competitive courses such as medicine, law and engineering.
Education officials have cautioned candidates against common application errors, including selecting programmes they do not qualify for, listing only highly competitive courses, and failing to complete submission.
After the application window closes, KUCCPS will process placements based on candidates’ grades, course choices and available slots. Successful applicants will be able to download admission letters and apply for student financing.
Candidates who fail to apply within the stipulated period risk missing out on government-sponsored placement.
