Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi was on Wednesday assaulted by a group of armed individuals in Kisumu in what his office described as a targeted and premeditated attack.
According to a statement from the Vihiga Senate Office, the senator had made a routine stop in the Acacia area for personal grooming before heading to a Java Restaurant, where he met a friend and interacted with members of the public for about 30 minutes.
It was during this time that a group of gun-wielding men confronted him, reportedly questioning his political stance before physically assaulting him, according to the statement written by Derrick Luvega, Director of Communication at Osotsi’s office.
The attackers allegedly demanded to know why he supports a one-term position instead of a two-term agenda.
The senator’s security team, which was present during the incident, exercised restraint and did not discharge firearms to avoid endangering civilians.
The office condemned the attack, terming it “barbaric and cowardly,” and called for swift action from the National Police Service.
Authorities have been urged to utilise CCTV footage from the restaurant to identify and apprehend the suspects.
“We call upon the National Police Service to act with urgency and thoroughness in investigating this incident,” the statement said.
The office also cautioned against linking the incident to Kisumu residents, noting that the senator had freely interacted with locals prior to the attack.
Investigations into the incident are expected to begin immediately.
