George Ayugi Wasingo, a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) aspirant for Kisumu East, has invoked the legacy of Raila Odinga to defend his party’s decision to field candidates across all elective positions nationwide.

In a message addressed to Kenyans, Wasingo credited Odinga with playing a pivotal role in the struggle for democracy and multiparty politics, noting that the freedoms enjoyed today are a result of years of sacrifice by opposition leaders.

“Raila Odinga fought tooth and nail for democracy and multipartism in this country. He sacrificed immensely so that Kenyans could have the freedom to choose their leaders and the right to multiple political parties,” Wasingo said.

He argued that it is this democratic space that now allows the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to confidently present candidates across the country, from ward-level seats to the presidency.

“Today, that same democracy he fought for allows UDA to confidently field candidates in every elective position across the country — from the smallest ward to the highest office,” he stated, dismissing claims that the move signals political overreach.

Wasingo maintained that UDA’s nationwide approach is not driven by arrogance but by a belief in democratic competition and the party’s vision for the country.

He emphasized that every political party has a constitutional right to seek support from voters in any region.

“This is not arrogance. This is the beauty of the democracy Raila and many others struggled for. Every party now has the right to compete. Every Kenyan has the right to choose,” he added.

As the country gradually shifts focus toward the next general elections, Wasingo said UDA is prepared to actively participate in all contests, underscoring the party’s commitment to offering leadership alternatives to voters.

“We are not hiding. We are not selective. We are presenting leaders for every position because we believe in our vision for Kenya. The people will decide,” he said.

He asserted that the democratic ideals championed by Odinga remain alive, noting that political competition across the country is a testament to the success of those struggles.

“What Raila fought for is alive — and UDA is using it fully,” Wasingo said.
