Amateur golfer Ali Wasim delivered a composed performance to win the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing Qualifying School after a tense final round at Limuru Country Club on Friday.

Wasim, who had led after the opening two rounds, carded a level-par 72 in the final round to finish at even-par 288, securing top spot and sealing qualification for the 2026/27 Sunshine Development Tour season.

His final round included birdies on the 6th, 9th, 15th and 17th holes, putting him firmly in control heading into the closing stretch. However, a double-bogey on the 18th created late drama before he held his nerve to clinch victory.

“It feels amazing to come through and win this. It’s been a tough week with a lot of pressure, but I’m proud of how I handled myself,” said Wasim.

“The finish was a bit nervy, especially on the last hole, but that’s golf. The most important thing is that I stayed calm enough to get the job done.”

Wasim’s triumph came after a third-round shift in momentum that saw John Karichu briefly take the lead, setting up a closely contested final day.

Karichu eventually finished tied for second alongside Andrew Procter at 2-over par 290.

Playing on home soil, Karichu managed just one birdie in the final round as he narrowly missed out on the title.

“Of course, I would have loved to win, especially playing at home, but overall I’m proud of how I competed this week,” Karichu said.

“There are a lot of positives to take from this. My game felt solid, and this gives me confidence heading into the Tour season.”

Procter also impressed with a strong finish, registering birdies on the 3rd, 6th, 15th and 16th holes to underline his consistency throughout the week.

“It’s been a really enjoyable week. The course was in great condition, and the competition was strong,” said Procter.

“This Tour is a great platform, and I’m looking forward to building on this performance.”

Sammy Mulama finished fourth at 8-over par 296, while Sujan Shah, William Odek and Isaac Wanyeche shared fifth place at 13-over par 301.

The tournament attracted 55 players from across Africa and beyond, highlighting the growing appeal of the Sunshine Development Tour as a pathway for emerging talent.

Attention now shifts to the West Africa Qualifying School set for April 13–15 at Lakowe Lakes Golf Estate, before the 2026/27 season tees off at Thika Sports Club from April 19–21.
