Kenya is mourning the passing of Retired Brigadier Edgar Pkiach Lopokoiyit, a decorated Kenya Air Force officer whose career spanned decades of service to the nation.
Brigadier Lopokoiyit, who once headed the National Air Support Department (NASD), died recently after a long illness bravely borne.
In a message of condolence, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi described him as “a gallant, selfless son, and officer who served his Country with utmost dedication.”
He added, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Retired Kenya Air Force Brigadier Edgar Pkiach Lopokoiyit, which I am informed happened after a long illness bravely borne.”
Brigadier Lopokoiyit’s career was marked by distinction.
As a pilot in the Kenya Defence Forces, he rose through the ranks to become a Brigadier and later served as Director at NASD, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening Kenya’s aviation and defence support systems.
His exemplary service earned him the Presidential Award of the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS), one of the country’s highest honours.
Family, friends, and colleagues in the KDF fraternity gathered at Moi Air Base, Eastleigh, on 9 April for his funeral service, paying tribute to a man remembered for his courage, discipline, and patriotism.
His passing is not only a loss to his family but also to the wider defence community and the nation he served with distinction.
Brigadier Lopokoiyit leaves behind a legacy of service and sacrifice, a reminder of the values that underpin Kenya’s military tradition.
“His memory will endure in the lives he touched and the institutions he helped strengthen,” Mudavadi said.
