The Ministry of Health has announced the end of the nurses’ strike at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

This followed what officials described as “intensive and constructive negotiations” between hospital management and the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNW).

Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, confirmed that a return-to-work formula had been agreed upon, addressing several long-standing concerns.

“The industrial action by nurses at Kenyatta National Hospital has been officially called off,” Duale said, adding that both sides had shown “goodwill, professionalism, and a shared commitment to resolving the issues at hand.”

The deal includes improvements in medical cover, structured promotions, measures to ease workload challenges, and the progressive conversion of contract nurses to permanent and pensionable terms.

“These are important steps toward strengthening staff welfare, motivation, and retention within our health system,” Duale noted.

He commended KNH management for ensuring continuity of essential services during the strike and urged nurses to resume duty promptly.

“As we move forward, the focus must now shift firmly to delivering quality, timely, and compassionate healthcare services to all Kenyans,” he said.

The Ministry of Health has pledged to monitor the implementation of the resolutions and maintain continuous engagement with stakeholders to prevent future disruptions.

Duale assured the public that the government remains committed to strengthening the health workforce and improving service delivery across all public facilities.
