The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with world football governing body FIFA, citing its role in advancing the sport locally.
Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, welcomed the ongoing FIFA Series tournament in Kenya, describing it as a timely boost that aligns with the Ministry’s efforts to elevate football standards in the country.
Mvurya made the remarks after a high-level meeting with FIFA Deputy Chief Member Associations and Regional Director for Africa, Gelson Fernandes.
The meeting was also attended by FKF President Hussein Mohamed and senior officials from CECAFA and COSAFA.
He said the tournament reflects growing international confidence in Kenya’s football development.
He noted that recent visits by FIFA and CAF leadership, followed by the FIFA Series, signal positive momentum for the sport.
Looking ahead to AFCON 2027, Mvurya said the tournament presents a valuable opportunity to build local capacity in event organization and management.
He added that the involvement of mostly Kenyan personnel in the competition demonstrates the government’s and FKF’s commitment to developing local expertise.
Fernandes echoed these sentiments, emphasizing FIFA’s focus on infrastructure and long-term growth.
He revealed that plans for a Technical Centre in Machakos County are progressing following an agreement reached last August between FIFA leadership and the Kenyan government, although some details are still being finalized.
He also announced that a FIFA Arena project will soon be launched in the country.
Additionally, discussions are ongoing regarding stadium development in Mombasa, with a focus on tapping talent across the country, not just in Nairobi.
