Opposition Leaders Accuse Ruto of Orchestrating Fuel Scandal, Want Resignations

By KPC Reporter

The United Alternative Government has issued a fiery press statement accusing President William Ruto and senior officials of masterminding what it calls “one of the greatest fuel scandals in the history of independent Kenya.”

The statement comes in the wake of dramatic arrests earlier this month of former Petroleum PS Mohamed Liban, ex‑EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo, and former Kenya Pipeline Corporation MD Joe Sang.

While the government framed the arrests as a crackdown on oil cartels, the opposition insists the real culprits remain untouched.

“The team leader for this oil scandal is Mr. William Ruto, Felix Koskei and their broad‑based experts,” the statement declared, alleging that CS for Energy Opiyo Wandayi and Senate Energy Committee Chair Oburu Odinga were key beneficiaries through their links to local oil marketing companies.

The opposition claims Gulf Energy, described as a proxy for President Ruto, failed to meet supply obligations under the government‑to‑government (G‑to‑G) framework, which involves Saudi Aramco, ADNOC, and ENOC.

Despite this, the company was allegedly forced back into the procurement process after its bid was initially rejected.

According to the statement, contingency fuel supplies had already been secured through One Petroleum and Oryx, with waivers granted by the Kenya Bureau of Standards to ensure product availability during the Easter holiday.

However, the opposition argues that Ruto intervened to protect Gulf Energy’s interests, leading to the dismissal of senior officials.

“Kenyans now have to pay for the greed and business of Mr. William Ruto not only on the pump but across all sectors of the economy,” the statement read.

It noted that fuel prices were increased on April 14 by KShs. 28.69 for petrol and KShs. 40.30 for diesel per litre – the highest in Kenya’s history.

The opposition further alleged that Ruto stands to profit KShs. 2.5 billion from the new pricing structure.

“What crime have the three gallant officers committed?” the statement asked, insisting that the arrested officials had followed the law.

The United Alternative Government is demanding the cancellation of the G‑to‑G petroleum framework, the resignation of CS Wandayi and CS Lee Kinyanjui, and immediate tax relief measures including suspension of fuel VAT and housing levies.

“This is the time, Mr. William,” the statement concluded.

“Kenyans are demanding that you immediately stop living your dream and utopia and face reality, put Wanjiku first.”
