A Kenyan delegation is participating in high-level global discussions on Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance in Geneva, Switzerland, as countries seek to shape the future of one of the world’s fastest-growing technologies.
The delegation is led by Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo Gitau, accompanied by Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Stephen Isaboke, among others.
Information from Geneva shows that the Kenyan delegation attended the opening ceremony of the Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance held alongside the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2026.
The dialogue brought together policymakers, scientists, technology leaders and international stakeholders to deliberate on frameworks for governing AI amid growing concerns over ethics, accountability, security, equity and human rights.
A key highlight of the meeting was the unveiling of the inaugural report by the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, a body established by the United Nations General Assembly to provide evidence-based recommendations on AI governance and its implications for humanity.
The discussions focused on how countries can harness the transformative potential of AI while putting in place safeguards to ensure the technology is deployed responsibly and in the public interest.
Kenya’s participation comes as the country seeks to strengthen its position in the global digital economy and leverage emerging technologies to drive economic growth, innovation and public service delivery.
According to officials attending the forum, the discussions underscored the need for international cooperation in developing AI systems that are trustworthy, transparent, inclusive and aligned with shared global values.
The forum also examined the role of governments, industry and research institutions in ensuring AI development supports sustainable development while minimizing potential risks associated with rapidly advancing technologies.

“Kenya remains committed to contributing to global conversations that promote innovation while ensuring AI serves the public good.”
Also representing Kenya at the event are the country’s Special Envoy on Technology, Ambassador Philip Thigo, and Communications Authority of Kenya Director General and Chief Executive Officer David Mugonyi.
Their participation highlights Kenya’s growing engagement in international digital policy discussions and its efforts to contribute to the development of global frameworks that will guide the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence.
Kenya is positioning itself to play an active role in shaping digital governance policies while ensuring AI contributes to sustainable development, innovation and shared prosperity.
