LSK Demands Swift Probe Into Murder of Advocate Edward Muthee Kariuki

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called for urgent and impartial investigations into the killing of advocate Edward Muthee Kariuki, who was found murdered outside his residence in Athi River on July 5.

In an interim statement issued on Monday, LSK described the death as a tragic loss to the legal profession and the country, while expressing concern over the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Mr. Muthee, who practised under the firm Edward Kariuki Law Advocates with offices along Kiambu Road, was found dead outside his home in what the society termed a “heinous incident.”

“The Law Society of Kenya expresses its profound grief and deep concern following the tragic death of Mr. Edward Muthee Kariuki, Advocate,” the statement said.

 “This heinous incident is a dark moment for the legal profession and the nation at large, and casts a grim shadow on the state’s duty to protect the lives of its citizens.”

The lawyers’ body extended its condolences to Muthee’s family, friends, colleagues and the wider legal fraternity, describing the incident as a significant blow to the profession.

LSK said it is actively following up on the case through its Lawyer–Police Liaison Committee and is in close contact with the deceased advocate’s family as investigations continue.

“The Society reiterates its unwavering commitment to ensuring that the truth surrounding this tragic incident is established and that those responsible are held fully accountable,” the statement said.

The society further pledged to closely monitor the progress of investigations and pursue all available legal, institutional and advocacy avenues to ensure justice is served.

“LSK will remain actively seized of this matter, closely monitor the progress of the investigations, and take all necessary legal, institutional, and advocacy measures to ensure that justice is not only done, but is manifestly seen to be done,” it added.

The lawyers’ body also urged law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough and expeditious investigations and appealed to members of the public with information that could assist detectives to come forward.

“The Law Society of Kenya calls upon the investigating agencies to conduct thorough, expeditious, and impartial investigations and urges anyone with relevant information to cooperate with the authorities in the pursuit of justice,” the statement said.

LSK President Charles Kanjama, SC, signed the statement, reaffirming the society’s commitment to the rule of law, the protection of advocates and the administration of justice.

The murder comes amid growing concerns over the safety of legal practitioners and is expected to intensify calls for enhanced protection and accountability in cases involving advocates.
